The Life of Gloria L. Gulleson

Glo, Our Sunshine

My Testimony

By: Gloria Gulleson

Being raised in a mainstream church until age 19 and then as an adult attending church and teaching a preschool Sunday school class did not make me a follower of Jesus. Church was more like a “feel good” social club with no understanding of who God is. I stopped attending church at age 29 as other things became more important to me and my family on Sunday mornings.

At age 37, a friend invited me to attend a big women’s Bible class in a neighboring town. Since I had just moved to a new area and was lonely, I decided to go to it, as I was curious as to why the Bible has been a best-selling book for so many years. When I walked into the church, I felt so at peace. The singing of hymns by 250 women brought tears to my eyes. After four classes, I heard the teacher ask the ladies,

“Have you ever accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Savior? If not, I urge you to do so today.” I thought, “Oh, is that what you do with Jesus?” My heart started racing, and I knew it was something I needed to do. So…when I got home, I immediately opened my Bible and prayed for Jesus to enter my life as my Savior. That is all I knew at the time.

As I studied the Bible each week it started to make sense to me-like a light bulb went off in my head.

After a few weeks, I began to see why Christ had died for me, as I started to understand what sin was and how I had been leading a life that was full of sin. One day I felt that I needed to wrote down all the things I could remember that I was ashamed of and needed to repent from during my 37 years. I put the long list under my mattress and asked Jesus to forgive me of my selfish and self-centered life I had been living. That confession brought me great peace in my heart. After a few days I decided to burn that list, as it was all forgiven by Jesus Christ. The love of Jesus started to fill me and the Bible became a wonderful book for me to study each week. I had truly been “born again” by the Spirit of God.

OBITUARY

Gloria Lee Gulleson passed away peacefully in her Gilbert home on May 30, 2023, after a 12-year struggle with breast cancer.

Gloria, the daughter of Carl and Bea Hancock, was born in Atlantic, Iowa on January 4, 1938.

She graduated from Lewis High School in Lewis, Iowa and in later life attended Palomar Community College in California for one year.

Gloria’s daughter, Leslie Donnelly (6-20-1960 – 12-4-2015) and son, Stephen Pinhero (11-21-1963 – 10-21-2022), preceded her in death.

She is survived by her husband, Jeff Gulleson of Gilbert, Arizona, her sister, Dolores A. Bice of Atlantic, Iowa; her grand-daughters Cassie Betancourt and Megan Donnelly and three great grand-daughters, Ana-leigh, Makenzie, and Chevelle

Gloria, as a young mother, helped raise money for the  “March of Dimes” and was on the Board of  Directors of March of Dimes for Riverside County, California.

She was exposed to the Gospel and came to understand the promise of eternal life through the ministry of Bible Study Fellowship in Vista, California.  On April 16, 1975, at the age of 37, while sitting at her kitchen table in her Encinitas, CA home, she prayed asking the Lord Jesus Christ to be her personal Savior and give her life eternal.  During the rest of her earthly pilgrimage, she faithfully followed her Savior and Lord and by all was considered a true follower of the Lord.

Gloria served as a “Group Discussion Leader” with Bible Study Fellowship for seven years.  She also served for many years as a volunteer at Carlsbad Community Church (Carlsbad, California). After moving to Arizona in 1995 she attended Bethany Community Church (now Sun Valley Community Church) in Tempe. As a member she sat on the Church Mission Board.

Gloria married Jeff Gulleson on July 8, 2000.  For 23 years she helped him with the development of Good Neighbor Insurance and also assisted in his work with Indopartners Agency and Guide Online, a digital outreach ministry to the 250 million Indo-Malay people of Indonesia.

Gloria had a deep love for God’s Word.  Every morning you would find her sitting in her recliner reading the Bible and praying for her family, friends and the world.  She loved to study the Bible with other Christians and spend time with her many Christian friends.  In the last days of her life she said, “I don’t know what I would do without my Christian friends!”

In spite of many trials and challenges Gloria was always upbeat, positive and generous with her time and resources.  She always was amazed at God’s creation and loved to travel enjoying both the ocean and the mountains.
