In Folden Township, Minnesota – The Original Log House
1883
It appears that Edward and Anna (and also Cecelia) changed their names to Gulleson when they immigrated to the USA. The family name means ‘son of Guile,’ Edvard’s father’s first name. In some records the last name is spelled Guleson.
1883 – Birth of Gunnellius
In April, Anna gave birth to a son, Gunnellius. (In a list of Nordic names, Gunelius is a male name)
Edward and Anna (with his mother Cecelia?) had sufficient funds to purchase a farm of 140 acres in Folden Township. The farm is located three miles east of Vining on Highway 210. It is about ½ mile south of the highway. The postal address for the farm is Henning even though the farm is in Folden Township. The family worshiped in Vining Lutheran Church. The farm is located somewhat closer to Vining than to Henning.
The 140 acres was barren country with no buildings, no cleared land and no roads. Edward set to work to build a log house.
1889 – Birth of Oscar on May 10.
1889 – Diptheria Epidemic and death of two children
“There were some major diphtheria epidemics in the late 1880s and early 1890s. In the Ole Stene home three boys passed away within three years. The Jens Jacobsen family lost four children. Records of the Vining Cemetery list 37 deaths of children between January and November of 1890, probably most from diptheria. All but two of these children were under the age of 15.” (Taken from Vining Centennial, 1882-1892)
Edward and Anna’s baby Oscar died on Sept. 14, 1889. On Sept. 30, 1889 Gunnellius died at the age of 6 years and five months (Taken from church records, Vining Lutheran Church). I think my mother said they died during this diphtheria epidemic. There is no record of their graves in the grave yard of the Vining Lutheran Church. The Vining Cemetery was dedicated in May 1890, the year after the deaths of these two children.
